WHO WE ARE
Tender Loving Canine (TLC) Rescue - Specializing in the American Eskimo is made up just myself and my husband. We do not have any buildings or offices. It's just us working out of our home. We foster dogs as many as we can at one time but due to limitations with City Ordinances and a small house, we are extremely limited on the number of dogs we can take in at one time unless we have foster homes. Our foster homes are spread across the US and sometimes Canada. We keep in touch with them on a regular basis via phone, email, fax, etc. None of us receive a paycheck. I work a full time job and my husband is disabled. He does most of the traveling for the rescue. That includes transporting to vets, home visits, adoptions, etc. We try our best to pick up dogs from owner surrenders and shelters in a timely manner but due to work schedules, doctors appointments, and school functions for our daughter we can't always be there when the call comes in. I promise it is done in a timely manner.
TLC Rescue does NOT make money by selling dogs. In most cases we are losing money with each dog that comes into the rescue. The majority of the money is spent on vet care for the dogs. Some dogs require extensive medical treatment and there are some that need just vaccinations. Donations and fundraising help make up the difference.
The dogs that come into our rescue come from various places. Most come from shelters/pounds, turned in by their owners who can no longer care for their dog and some are brought to us strays. TLC Rescue works to save as many Eskies as possible but we are limited on what we can do since we run on a much smaller scale than some other organizations. The dogs that come into our rescue receive complete veterinary care for whatever they need and they are placed on our website in hopes of finding them a new fur-ever home.
Please know that TLC Rescue does NOT sell dogs. We do have an adoption fee to help offset the cost for veterinary care. We find homes for the eskies and adopt the dog to a good home. What does this mean? It means you cannot just walk off the street and buy a dog from us. You must put in an application to adopt one of our dogs. All applicants are screened carefully. We check references and do home visits. The home visits are painless and it's to make sure the dog is going to a good home, to see how the dog does in your environment (depending on location), and gets along with family members and pets. We do our best to make a good match between the adopting family and the eskie they have chosen.
HOW WE GOT STARTED
Tender Loving Canine (TLC) Rescue - Specializing in the American Eskimo was founded in 2002 by Don and Tracie Cobb. We started this rescue with the hopes of saving the lives of the American Eskimo Dog and placing them in forever homes where they will be loved and cared for just as much as we do, if not more (if that is possible)
We first became involved with rescue when we fostered for Tri-State Collie Rescue. Sharon Goodburn had called us and asked us to foster a collie by the name of Rusty. (That's what we named him). Rusty was being treated for heartworm and was staying with us during spring break so Sharon would be able to provide boarding for her kennel customers. Once Rusty came into our home, we knew he wouldn't go back. He was just the perfect dog. He was very calm, laid back, loving etc.
After a few years of volunteering for other rescue organizations and doing transports, we decided to start our own rescue. We started on June 1, 2002 as an All Breed Rescue. A year later we realized we should really be doing a breed that we are familiar with and that's the American Eskimo breed and the American Eskimo Mixes.
We have been blessed with our rescue. We have met a lot of people along the way and have saved over 150 dogs since June 2002. No, that doesn't seem like a lot but we are a small organization doing what we can with two people, Don and Tracie. We are the heart and soul of TLC Rescue and without foster homes, it limits us as to how many we can save at a time.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped us in the past and currently with our rescue. We would like to especially thank my family: KyleAnn Williams, Lauren D. Smith, Jr, and Lauren Dean Smith, III for your wonderful support over the years. Without you, this would not have been possible for us to go on.
MISSION STATEMENT
Tender Loving Canine Rescue (TLC Rescue) - Specializing in the American Eskimo is a rescue organization devoted to the American Eskimo. TLC Rescue is devoted to providing charitable and educational services regarding the following:
-
quality shelter and care of unwanted, neglected and/or abused dogs until proper, permanent homes can be found.
-
advice to potential and current dog owners about breed characteristics, proper care, health issues, training and behavior.
All dogs brought into TLC Rescue are examined and treated by VCA Westerville East Animal Hospital located in Westerville. Not only are the dogs examined, but they are also inoculated and spayed or neutered before placement, if necessary.
TLC Rescue believes there is a home for every dog. Before TLC Rescue will place a dog in his/her forever home, we will do our best to make sure their needs, as well as their new owners, meet each other's needs both physically and emotionally. TLC Rescue looks for people with patient and loving hearts and an understanding of their new furkid in mind.
TLC Rescue believes that no dog should be euthanized due to a lack of a home. The dogs that are not placed right away will stay at TLC Rescue until a suitable home is found for them.
